Description
A full-size hand-forged double bit axe on a 36-inch hickory handle, built for felling, bucking, and heavy chopping. Two forged edges let you keep one sharp for clean wood and the other for the knotty, dirty work that dulls a blade fast.
Handmade in Central Texas
Every double bit axe is forged one at a time by hand at our shop in Waco. The head is heated and hammered to shape, both edges are ground and sharpened by hand, and it is hung on a hickory handle fitted to that head. This is a tool a person stood at a forge and made start to finish.
The double-bit head
Hand-forged from high carbon steel, heated and hammered to shape one piece at a time. The double-bit design carries its weight in line with the swing, so it bites deep and tracks straight through a cut instead of glancing off.
The two edges
Both bits are ground and honed by hand. The classic way to run a double bit is to keep one edge keen for clean, seasoned wood and the other a touch stouter for knots, dirt, and rougher work, so you always have a fresh edge without stopping to sharpen. A few passes on a stone or file bring either one back.
The hickory handle
American hickory, the wood that has handled striking tools for generations because it soaks up shock without splitting. Thirty-six inches for a full two-handed swing and the leverage to drive the head through heavy wood.
