Every axe here is forged by hand in our shop at the Homestead Craft Village, one at a time. We start with a block of low carbon steel for the body and forge-weld a high carbon steel insert along the edge. That gives you an axe that takes a hard, lasting edge and stands up to real work, season after season.
These are working tools that happen to look the part. The felling axe for dropping timber. The camp axe for the truck and the trail. The double bit axe for heavier work, and the hatchet for close work around the fire.
Our shop was founded by Caleb Nolen, who trained at Gransfors Bruk in Sweden, one of the oldest axe forges in the world. Every axe is forged to the standard he set, by hand, the old way. Because they are made by hand, no two are exactly alike. Pick the one that fits the work you do.
